Upgrading Dell Precision 470 - UpgradeHard Drive

November 24, 2011

The first thing we determined is that a 40 GB HDD isn't going to cut it as the boot drive for Windows 7 Untimate. We picked a Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive. Why didn't we go with a 1 TB drive? We might later, but the documentation on this box says it only support up to 500 GB drives. So the original 40 GB drive will now be configured as the D: drive where we will store our temporary files and use it as a scratch drive for PhotoShop and CloneDVD. Since we bought this as a bare drive we needed to provide our own SATA cable. The Dell Prcision 470 came from the factory with power cables for any upgrade you would ever need which was a plus.

With the new drive all plugged in we put in the Windows 7 DVD and booted the workstation. We aren't trying to make a Windows 7 Installation tutorial here so for now we will assume that you have done this installation before. We are going to install the x64 version. The Microsoft 32-bit and 64-bit Windows: frequently asked questions is here. Information about installing and reinstalling Windows 7 is here.
