Upgrading Dell Precision 470

We have a couple of Dell Precision 470's around the office and lately have wondered just how much horse power we could squeeze out of them. The desktop box itself is built like a tank and we have always been pleased with our Dell computers.

The base configuration started out like this:

  • 2 x Xeon Single Core 3.2 Ghz CPU (SL7ZE) 800 Mhz Buss Speed 4 MB L2 Cache Socket 604
  • NVIDIA Quadro FX 4400
  • 40 Gb SATA II HDD
  • 4 GB ECC Ram
  • Windows XP Professional x64
  • The mother board is part number 0XC838 upgraded BIOS to A07.

The goal is to see how much performance we can get based on the Windows Experience Index. The system is also very quiet and we want to keep it that way.

Some of our ideas at this point are:

  • Upgrade OS to Windows 7 Ultimate
  • 2 x Xeon Dual Core 2.8 GHZ CPU's (SL8MA) 800 Mhz Buss Speed 4 MB L2 Cache Socket 604
  • Fanless Video Card
  • Increase HDD capacity and performance
  • Upgrade RAM beyond 4 GB
